Nasser Hussain: 'Alastair Cook is back to his best after breaking runs record'

Hussain hails record breaker Cook

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has heaped praise on Alastair Cook for becoming the country's all-time leading Test run scorer.

The opener scored 75 on day two of the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley to go past Graham Gooch's long-standing record.

Hussain told Sky Sports News: "He is back to somewhere near his best if not at his best. It was a great moment when he overtook Graham Gooch.

"The crowd rose to him – they really did. They appreciated a man who has given a lot for his country. Cook is someone who has been through the ups and downs of it.

"It was a very special moment for Alastair, going past his mentor and hero as Mike Atherton said on commentary. I think Graham will be quietly sitting somewhere pleased that Alastair has done it."

Cook made his England debut in 2006 and has captained the side since 2012.
