England lose toss ahead of first Test

Sri Lanka have won the toss for the first Test match at Headingley, with Angelo Mathews deciding to put England into bat.

England are competing in their first five-day fixture since their successful tour of South Africa at the turn of the year, but Alastair Cook's men must contend with the overcast conditions on Thursday morning.

It was announced on Wednesday that Steven Finn had been given the nod over Jake Ball for the final seamer's spot, while James Vince has been handed his debut at number five.

After being put into bat, Cook will have the opportunity to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket, with the opening batsman currently 36 runs short of the landmark.

England: Cook, Hales, Compton, Root, Vince, Stokes, Bairstow, Moeen, Broad, Finn, Anderson

Sri Lanka: Karunaratne, Silva, Mendis, Chandimal, Mathews, Thirimanne, Shanaka, Herath, Chameera, Eranga, Pradeep
