After the tourists were bowled all out for 351 to give them a lead of 345, captain Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook were both dismissed by Vernon Philander as the hosts ended the day on 16-2.

Hashim Amla top scored for the Proteas with 121 before he was sent back to the pavilion by Steve Finn.

Jonathan Trott (6) and Ian Bell (4) will start at the crease on Monday as England pursue their highest-ever run chase to stay top of the world Test rankings.
