England captain Alastair Cook has revealed that Joe Root "seems fine" after an unprovoked attack on him by Australia's David Warner.

Warner, who has been sanctioned by Cricket Australia, is understood to have swung a punch at Root in a Birmingham bar in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident came hours after England had beaten Australia in their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy.

"[Root] seems fine. He just wants to get matter buried," Cook told reporters. "He's an excellent young man. It's unfortunate this has happened but he wants to put it behind him."

England return to action on Thursday when they face Sri Lanka at The Oval.
