The hosts resumed play after an early lunch due to rain on 46-1, with David Warner (29) being the only man to fall to Stuart Broad in the morning session.

James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar have shared the wickets to get their team into a decent position.

Watson (51) was the first man to go when he prodded the ball back to Anderson after getting to his 21st Test-match fifty.

Rogers (74) made his third half-ton but fell victim to Swann, before Panesar beat Smith (6) with the pitch looking increasingly susceptible to spin.

George Bailey will be the new man at the crease after tea alongside skipper Michael Clarke (6).
