England trail Australia by 245 runs at the end of day three of the final Ashes Test at The Oval.

England have reached 247-4 at the end of day three of the final Ashes Test at The Oval, trailing Australia by 245 runs.

After the hosts resumed on 32-0, Alastair Cook and Joe Root put on their first 50 partnership of the series before Cook edged to Brad Haddin off Ryan Harris for 25.

Joe Root and Jonathan Trott saw England through to lunch and kept the score ticking over during the afternoon session.

Root (68) lost his wicket when his attempted sweep off the bowling of Nathan Lyon was caught by Shane Watson.

Trott became the next man to fall just before tea when he was caught lbw by Mitchell Starc for 40.

England began the evening session on 181-3, with Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell taking a cautious approach in the middle.

Pietersen (50) notched up his half-century off 125 balls before being caught in the slips by Watson off the bowling of Starc.

England will resume on day four with Bell (29*) and Chris Woakes (15*) at the crease.
