Australia wrap up first Test

Australia beat India by 122 runs to win the first Test in Melbourne.

Australia bowled out India for 169 in their second innings to win the first Test in Melbourne inside four days.

Young seamer James Pattinson recorded figures of 4-53, including the wickets of Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni to dismiss India 122 short of their target.

The Aussies earlier added 61 for their last two wickets, despite Mike Hussey (89) being caught behind having added just ten to his overnight total.

However Pattinson (37) and Ben Hilfenhaus (14) contributed a last wicket stand of 41 to set the tourists 292 for victory.

Hilfenhaus then dismissed Virender Sehwag for seven before later trapping Virat Kholi lbw first ball.

Pattinson then charged through the Indian middle order before Peter Siddle took the key wicket of Sachin Tendulkar (32) to leave the visitors struggling at 81-6.

Although the lower order came out swinging, wickets fell at regular intervals as Australia secured a comfortable first Test victory.

The second Test begins in Sydney on January 3.
