William Porterfield: "We needed a good start"

William Porterfield has admitted that his side need to improve the way they begin a Twenty20 innings after Ireland were comfortably beaten by Australia.

The Ireland captain was dismissed in the first ball of the match and they struggled to recover from losing early wickets as they posted 123 in Colombo, a target that Australia passed with relative ease.

"Losing those four wickets pretty early, we started on the back foot," recalled Porterfield. "We needed a good start to set up a platform for ourselves.

"We have played enough Twenty20 cricket to know that we should be giving ourselves a bit more time.

"That probably cost us those 40 or 50 runs that would have made it a very, very good game."

Ireland will have to beat the West Indies to give themselves a chance of progressing from the group stage.
