Ed Cowan to make Australia debut against India

Uncapped Ed Cowan is called into the Australian squad to face India in a four-Test series as a replacement for the out-of-form Phil Hughes.

Ed Cowan will open the batting against India on his debut next week after being named in a 13-man Test squad.

The 29-year-old heads the batting order instead of Phil Hughes, who lost his place after a disappointing series against New Zealand.

Usmain Khawaja has also been dropped by the Australian selectors for the four-Test series starting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day.

Cowan is expected to open the batting with David Warner as Shane Watson was not considered for selection due to injury.

Australia also have injury concerns over Shaun Marsh, and uncapped Dan Christian has been called up as cover in case Marsh doesn't recover.

Squad: Michael Clarke (captain), David Warner, Ed Cowan, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Brad Haddin, Dan Christian, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon
