Australia thrash England to complete 4-0 Ashes rout

Australia record their biggest win of a dominant Ashes series to wrap up a 4-0 victory over England in the fifth and final Test in Sydney.

Australia have wrapped up a 4-0 victory over England in The Ashes with their biggest win of the series, beating the tourists by an innings and 123 runs in the fifth and final Test in Sydney.

A miserable Ashes campaign ended in even greater embarrassment for England, who were bowled out for just 180 in their second innings to fall to another chastening defeat.

Captain Joe Root showcased some notable defiance by returning to the crease an hour into the day, despite spending the morning in hospital with severe dehydration due to a bout of gastroenteritis.

Root managed to reach 58 before being forced to retire for a second time, and in his absence Pat Cummins ran riot with three wickets for just 12 runs.

Cummins ended the match with figures of 8-119 to leave himself as the leading wicket-taker of the series, with Jonny Bairstow (38) the only England batsman to offer any notable support for Root.

England end the series having taken only 58 wickets throughout - their second-lowest tally in a five Test series Down Under.

England must now turn their attention to winning back the urn on home soil next year, but by the time they next travel to Australia they would have been without an away Ashes Test win for more than a decade.
