Oleksandr Gvozdyk withstands Mikhail Dauhaliavets challenge

Ukraine's Oleksandr Gvozdyk beats tough Belorusian Mikhail Dauhaliavets in the first round of the Olympic light-heavyweight competition.

Ukraine's Oleksandr Gvozdyk has defeated Mikhail Dauhaliavets of Belarus to advance into the next round the Olympic light-heavyweight competition.

Both men set up for a good old fashioned scrap from the opening bell, with not much movement and plenty of work on the inside.

Gvozdyk took a one-point lead into the second round, which started with both men taking centre of the ring and trading hurtful blows.

The Ukrainian's accuracy was pinpoint as he zeroed in with a number of well-timed shots to stretch his advantage to four points.

Dauhaliavets, who was given a standing count in the second, never gave up and went after Gvozdyk in the final round, but the Ukrainian had too much quality.

In the end, the judges scored the bout 18-10 in Gvozdyk's favour.
