Vassell retains Commonwealth title

Denton Vassell has retained his Commonwealth welterweight title after a points victory against Samuel Colomban.

The defending champion asserted his authority as early as the second round when he delivered a string of body shots to the challenger.

The 27-year-old stepped up his attack in the sixth round when he caught his opponent with a number of stinging right hooks.

In an entertaining encounter, Colomban did well to resist the onslaught by Vassell and occassionally rattled the champion.

However, he was unable to land any telling blows, and the judges announced Vassell the winner.
