Stephen Smith stops Mauricio Javier Munoz in Leeds

British super-featherweight Stephen Smith beats Mauricio Javier Munoz to win the WBC silver title.

British super-featherweight Stephen Smith has won the WBC silver title after Mauricio Javier Munoz retired on his stool at the end of the eighth round.

Smith was given a tough examination by Munoz, but after taking punishment from the Liverpudlian during the eighth, the Argentine failed to make it out for the next round.

The 28-year-old edged the contest during the opening stages, but Munoz began to gain confidence during the middle rounds as Smith looked for a way to counter the South American's charge.

However, the eighth turned out to be the final round after Munoz took several shots to the body from Smith, and that was enough for him to pull out of the encounter.

Smith could now fight for the main WBC strap later in the year.
