McDonnell holds off Kameda challenge

Jamie McDonnell defeated Tomoki Kameda on a unanimous points decision in Texas to retain his WBA bantamweight championship.

The 29-year-old was floored in the third round of the bout as he took a powerful right hand from the Japanese, but pulled himself off the canvas to force his way back into the fight.

McDonnell battled back with a series of blows to Kameda to wrestle back the initiative and knock the 23-year-old out of his rhythm.

The Doncaster man finished the fight strongly with a couple jabs in the final round to give him confidence of victory at the bell.

The judges declared McDonnell the winner by a narrow margin as three recorded scores of 114-113 improved the 29-year-old's record to 26-2-1 and handed Kameda the first defeat of his career.
