Sean Duffy: "We came here looking to make a statement"

Northern Ireland boxer Sean Duffy believes that he has made "a statement" at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Northern Ireland boxer Sean Duffy believes that he has made "a statement" after advancing into the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

The light-welterweight, who is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal, moved past Khir Akyazlan Azmi on Tuesday evening to set up a last-four clash with Junias Jonas.

"We came here looking to make a statement," he told Sports Mole immediately after the bout.

"Coming into the tournament I was the complete underdog, nobody had heard of me because I took so long out of boxing a couple of years ago. We came here to make a statement and I believe we just made it.

"We came here as a team with the coaches saying that there was no such thing as bronze medals. It is gold and only gold."

Duffy also insisted that there would be no time to relax in the coming days.

"You don't so much relax, you try to put that fight behind you and think ahead to what is coming up next," he added.

Duffy's semi-final bout is on Friday.
