Steven Donnelly "happy" with performance

Northern Ireland boxer Steven Donnelly has revealed that he was "happy" with his performance in his last-16 bout at the Commonwealth Games.

The welterweight advanced into the quarter-finals of the competition after overcoming Tongan Oscar Finau on points.

"I am happy with that. I am glad it lasted the distance, I didn't want to blow myself out in the first round because at the medal stage you are not going to be able to do that," he told Sports Mole.

"It was a wee bit tougher than I expected, but it is good to get my body conditioned for three rounds in this competition so I am over the moon."

Donnelly also praised his quarter-final opponent Custio Clayton, but is confident of overcoming the Canadian.

"He is good. He is the favourite – small and strong and I will need to bring my A game to beat him, but I believe I will with my boxing skills," he added.

Donnelly faces Clayton on Wednesday.
