Michael Conlan: 'I was too clever for Shiva Thapa'

Northern Ireland boxer Michael Conlan has said that he "outsmarted" world number three Shiva Thapa following his last-16 win at the Commonwealth Games.

Bantamweight Conlan booked his place in the quarter-final of the -56kg category with a unanimous points decision over the Indian fighter.

The 22-year-old, who previously claimed that he would 'throw away' any medal he wins unless it is gold, says that there is "plenty more" to come from him.

"It was a tough fight from start to finish," he told BBC Sport.

I was very nervous today, because he's a very skilful fighter and I knew it could be my hardest fight of the competition. I outsmarted him.

"It wasn't my best performance but there's plenty more to come from me. Gold's the only thing in my eyes."

The Northern Irish have one medal at the Games thus far following Lisa Kearney's bronze in the judo.
