De La Hoya: 'Alvarez's jab can beat Mayweather'

Oscar De La Hoya has urged Saul Alvarez to hone his jab in order to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

'Canelo' will square off against the unbeaten Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 14, and De La Hoya, who is now the promoter of Golden Boy, feels that Alvarez should work extensively on his jab offence.

"[The jab] is the secret weapon to defeat Mayweather," BoxingScene.com quotes De La Hoya as saying.

"That's the weapon [Mayweather] does not know how to defend against. For 'Canelo', the jab is the key to open any door. 'Canelo' has to keep up with the jab, use his intelligence and have a good game plan."

De La Hoya was defeated by Mayweather in May 2007, with the fight generating a record-breaking 2.5m buys on PPV.
