Saul Alvarez stops Caleb Plant to become undisputed super-middleweight champion

Canelo stops Plant late to unify super-middleweight belts

Saul Alvarez has become the undisputed super-middleweight champion by stopping Caleb Plant in Las Vegas.

The Mexican, who was looking to complete his collection with Plant's IBF title, controlled the bout before dropping Plant twice in the 11th round.

After weeks of hostility between the pair, Plant probably edged a tentative opening round, but Canelo did not intend on being watchful for longer than he felt was necessary.

The intensity increased, almost round on round, as Alvarez landed freely with his hooks, and it was a left which eventually forced Plant to the canvas.

The underdog gamely got to his feet and continued but Alvarez sensed blood, proceeding to pummel his opponent to the canvas which led to the referee waving off the fight.

Canelo, who will now entertain challenges at super-middleweight and at 175lbs, will take a break over the new year before returning to the ring at the beginning of May.
