Ricky Burns survives scare to stop Jose Gonzalez

WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns survives an early scare to stop Jose Gonzalez after nine rounds in Glasgow on Saturday night.

Scotland's Ricky Burns has defended his WBO lightweight title against Puerto Rican Jose Gonzalez.

The unbeaten Gonzalez travelled to Glasgow for his first fight outside his homeland and provided Burns with a sterner test than many anticipated.

Gonzalez retired on his stool at the end of the ninth round, citing a suspected broken hand as the reason.

After feeling each other out in the opening couple of rounds, it was Gonzalez who started to dominate, beating the champion to the punch while proving very awkward to hit himself.

In rounds five and six, the challenger really made his mark, pushing Burns onto the ropes and unloading a series of hurtful blows to the body and head.

They exchanged some good shots in round seven, with both men looking shaken at one stage and both looking increasingly tired.

It was Burns who found something extra, though, catching his opponent with some damaging shots in round eight and seemingly starting to work out his tricky opponent.

In the ninth round Burns continued as the aggressor, pushing his opponent back and landing his jab at will, but without really hurting Gonzalez. However, the Puerto Rican did not come out for the 10th round, giving Burns the 36th win of his 38-fight career.
