Australia's Shelley Watts too strong for Laishram Devi in lightweight final

Australia's Watts takes lightweight gold

Shelley Watts has become the first ever lightweight champion at the Commonwealth Games following a victory over India's Laishram Devi in Glasgow.

It was a poor start to the bout for the Australian as Devi started quickly, landing a number of clean blows on her way to taking the first round.

Watts fought back impressively in the second round as she pushed her rival back against the ropes with a series of powerful combinations, with Devi struggling to launch an attack of her own for a long spell.

The Indian attempted to take control of the fight again in the third, but Watts started to display her ability by picking off her rival to take the lead on points.

Watts was dominant in the final round of the fight as a tiring Devi struggled to put an end to the flow of punches from her opponent, who took the title thanks to a unanimous decision.
