Oklahoma City Thunder fire coach Scott Brooks

The Oklahoma City Thunder announce that they have sacked Scott Brooks after six years in full charge of the team.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have sacked coach Scott Brooks after six years in full charge of the NBA team.

The 49-year-old was initially named interim head coach in November 2008 and guided the Thunder back to the playoffs in his first full season in charge in 2009-10.

However, this season they missed the playoffs for the first time since Brooks took full charge. They weren't helped by injuries to reigning MVP Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka, but Brooks won't be given a second chance in OKC.

"This is an extremely difficult decision on many levels," Thunder general manager Sam Presti said in a statement.

"Scott helped establish the identity of the Thunder and has earned his rightful place in the history of our organization through his seven years as a valued leader and team member."

In seven total seasons with the Thunder, Brooks had a record of 338-207 and was named the 2009-10 NBA Coach of the Year.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Brooks becomes an instant candidate for the coaching jobs at the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets.
