Andy Reid pleased with Alex Smith contract

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid admits that he was pleased to tie quarterback Alex Smith down to a long-term deal at the club.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has revealed that he is delighted with the decision of Alex Smith to sign a new four-year deal with the club.

The Chiefs acquired Smith last year in a trade deal with the San Francisco 49ers, and 30-year-old guided the club to an 11-5 record and an appearance in the post-season in his first campaign with Reid's side.

"John [Dorsey] and his staff along with Tom and his group have worked hard to get this deal done. They've done a nice job," Reid told the club's official website.

"Alex is a smart, talented football player that has adapted well to our offensive scheme. He also, obviously, has had a tremendous amount of success as a quarterback in this league. We as a team are very happy to have Alex as our quarterback moving forward."

The Chiefs open their 2014 campaign on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
