Russia official: 'Mikhail Maksimochkin suffered rib damage'

Russian ski jumper Mikhail Maksimochkin could be forced to pull out of the 2014 Sochi Games due to rib damage.

Russia's Mikhail Maksimochkin suffered damage to his rib cage following a crash during training on the large hill, and his participation in the ongoing Sochi Games is now in doubt.

The ski jumper was taken to hospital on Wednesday night after paramedics immobilised him with a neck and back brace and strapped him to a stretcher.

Marina Kalinina of the Russian ski jumping and Nordic combined federation has told The AP that Maksimochkin was kept in hospital overnight for observation, while Alexander Uvarov, president of the national ski jumping federation, has admitted that the athlete's 2014 Winter Olympics campaign may be over.

"Usually it takes a week to take off pain and from two to three weeks to heal the injury," he said.

"He has his ribs fractures. So far, there is no indication that he might continue to compete.

"But you know, athletes sometimes will insist to go on despite their injuries. It's up to him, his coach and doctors to make the final decision."

Russia have won 11 medals in Sochi so far.
