Andy Murray named as third seed for US Open

British number one Andy Murray will defend his US Open title as third seed following Rafael Nadal's rise to world number two.

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has been seeded third for the US Open at Flushing Meadows as he attempts to retain his title.

The Scotsman has dropped from world number two due to Rafael Nadal's boost in the rankings following his title-winning victory in the Cincinnati Masters.

According to BBC Sport, former world number one Roger Federer will enter next week's tournament as seventh seed, which is the lowest ranking for the Swiss since October 2002.

If British hopeful Laura Robson recovers from a wrist injury, then she will be seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam, with the 31st spot expected to be attributed to her.
