Live Commentary: US Open - day seven as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live text commentary from day seven of the US Open as the fourth round gets underway at Flushing Meadows.

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live text commentary from day seven of the US Open.

Today sees the final third-round matches and the opening last-16 ties played at Flushing Meadows.

Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka are all in action, but all eyes are sure to be on Laura Robson later as she follows up her giant-killing exploits against defending champion Samantha Stosur.

As always, you can follow all the action right here with us.

11.56pmWe'll be bringing you that match, and many others, over the course of tomorrow. But for now, we'll bid you a goodnight. Thanks for joining Jack and I today. Hope you've enjoyed the coverage.

11.52pmThe world number four is back in action tomorrow (well around 2am Tuesday to be precise) against Canada's Milos Raonic. History bodes well for Murray, who has never lost under lights at Flushing Meadows.

11.50pmOf course Robson's exit means that there is now only one Brit left competing at the US Open - a certain Andy Murray!

11.49pmStosur will now play the winner of Victoria Azarenka versus Anna Tatishvili. It's hard to look beyond Azarenka in that one to be honest.

11.46pmStosur has been discussing Robson during her post-match interview: "I think she's a very good player with lots of years ahead of her. She's one we have to look out for in the future."

11.44pmHer run to round four is likely to see her rise to around 75 in the world rankings. That can only be good news. Fingers crossed that she starts to gain slightly easier draws during the early rounds of the Slams - allowing her to move up even further.

11.41pmAnd let's not forget she is only 18! She has a long career ahead of her and matches like this will only help her in the future.

11.40pmThere is nothing for Robson to feel ashamed of there though. She's had a great campaign at Flushing Meadows. She may have lost but she showed great character throughout that match. A lesser player would have lost a lot earlier than she did.

11.38pmGAME SET AND MATCH! No she won't! At the ninth time of asking defending champion Stosur is through to the quarter-finals of at the expense of Robson.

11.37pmShe hits long! One down, one to go! Surely Robson won't survive again, will she?!

11.36pmEIGHTH AND NINTH MATCH POINT STOSUR...

11.35pmIt's 15-30 in favour of Stosur. Can Robson respond again? She needs to.

11.34pmGAME SET AND MATCH! Gasquet runs out a 7-6 6-2 6-3 winner against Johnson.

Robson 4-6 *4-5 StosurBREAK! YES! She's done it. That is stunning from Robson. She's faced seven match points in the last two games but she is still alive and kicking.

11.31pmBREAK POINT ROBSON...

11.31pmBut Robson forces another error from Stosur. Extremely brave from the Brit.

11.30pmSEVENTH MATCH POINT STOSUR...

11.30pmAn unforced error sees the Aussie pass up the opportunity again!

11.29pmSIXTH MATCH POINT STOSUR...

Robson 4-6 3-5* StosurRobson's done it! She's managed to hold and saved six matches doing so! Great character from the young Brit. Now though, she HAS to break or her US Open campaign is over.

11.24pmBut again the Aussie hits long! This is unbelievable.

11.24pmFIFTH MATCH POINT STOSUR...

11.23pmThis time a forehand winner from Robson keeps her in it. She's showing great character.

11.23pmFOURTH MATCH POINT STOSUR...

11.21pmBut it's not a case of third time lucky! She finds the net again. This has been an extremely entertaining game.

11.20pmTHIRD MATCH POINT STOSUR...

11.17pmBut again Stosur faults. This time she hits the net. Robson is somehow still in this.

11.16pmSECOND MATCH POINT STOSUR...

11.15pmStosur hits wide. Robson is still alive, just! Deuce.

11.14pmMATCH POINT STOSUR...

Robson 4-6 *2-5 StosurAwesome. That's the best way to describe that game from Stosur. Any momentum Robson had built up was trampled on there! The Aussie is one game away.

Robson 4-6 2-4* StosurVery good from Robson. She's pushed all the way, but holds out. A break here would be very nice.

11.03pmSET! Gasquet is now two in front of Johnson, this time running out a 6-2 victor.

Robson 4-6 *1-4 StosurStosur has other ideas though. It's a swift hold from the Aussie, who is just two games away from a place in the quarter-finals now.

Robson 4-6 1-3* StosurBREAK! Robson hits long and that could be curtains for the 18-year-old. You feel an instant break back is an absolute must.

10.59pmBREAK POINT STOSUR...

Robson 4-6 *1-2 StosurShe knocked plenty of times, but Stosur eventually slammed the door in Robson's face. A really good hold for the Australian. Over to you Robbo...

10.52pm...But again a smart one-two from Stosur knocks Robson back.

10.52pmTHIRD BREAK POINT ROBSON...

10.50pmAnd another bites the dust. Disappointing for Robson. Deuce.

10.49pmA fantastic serve from Stosur saves the first one.

10.48pmTWO BREAK POINTS ROBSON

10.48pmGAME SET AND MATCH: Tipsarevic is through thanks to a 6-4 6-3 7-5 win over Zemlja. He will now face either Philipp Kohlschreiber or John Isner.

Robson 4-6 1-1* StosurThat is just what the doctor ordered in this situation. Robson holds with ease.

Robson 4-6 *0-1 StosurStosur opens up the second set with a hold of serve. Robson must follow suit here otherwise this could be over very quickly.

10.37pmSET! What an awful way to surrender the first set. Robson double faults to hand Stosur a 6-4 triumph. It looks a long way back for the Brit right now.

10.36pmAnother one saved! One remaining.

10.35pmRobson saves one with a volley down the line. Two more to go.

10.34pmTHREE SET POINTS STOSUR

10.32pmSET! Gasquet wins an opening set tie break against Johnson 7-4. Advantage the Frenchman.

Robson *4-5 StosurStosur finally comes out on top with what you would describe a champion's reaction! Robson now serving to stay in the set.

10.31pmNot quite sure what she did with that return there. It almost hit the umpire! Back to deuce.

10.30pmSECOND BREAK POINT ROBSON

10.29pmBut she hits long. Deuce.

10.29pmBREAK POINT ROBSON

Robson 4-4* StosurEqually as impressive from Robson. Big couple of games coming up now as the set nears a conclusion.

Robson *3-4 StosurThat was a really good hold from the defending champ. She barely gave Robson a sniff in that one.

Robson 3-3* StosurAnything Stosur can do...Robson serves out to love - including a final point ace. Really good response from the teenager.

Robson *2-3 StosurA love game for Stosur as Robson makes a couple of unforced errors. Really important that the Brit holds now.

Robson 2-2* StosurBREAK! Well that didn't last long! Stosur breaks back at the first time of asking. Game on again.

10.13pmSET! Tipsarevic now leads 2-0 in terms of sets over Zemlja thanks to a 6-3 triumph.

Robson *2-1 StosurBREAK! Gotcha! Fantastic start from Robson, whose powerful shot to the baseline causes Stosur no end of problems. The Aussie gets her racket to the ball, but it's high and wide. A hold from the Brit now and she is in business.

10.07pmStosur saves one of them with a clinical forehand winner down the line. One to go.

10.07pmTWO BREAK POINTS ROBSON

Robson 1-1* StosurIt's tit-for-tat after two games. Commanding service performance from Robson.

Robson *0-1 StosurStosur holds for a 1-0 lead. Positive start from Robson also. She produced a couple of winners which will have given her opponent something to ponder.

9.59pmWarm-ups done - Stosur will get us underway...

9.57pmLooking at Stosur, the Australian is very strong from the back of the court. Long rallies will suit her that's for sure. It's important from Robson's point of view that she ends points quickly.

9.54pmAhead of this match, Robson has been talking about her luck with injuries recently. The 18-year-old has been injury-free of late - something that has pleased her greatly.

9.48pmIt looks a daunting prospect, but having already beaten two of the best in the world, why can't she account for Stosur as well? Let's hope that she is thinking that way. I'm sure she is.

9.45pmThe 18-year-old Brit has surprised many so far at Flushing Meadows, having already knocked out Kim Clijsters and Li Na. This evening she faces defending champion Samantha Stosur.

9.44pmRight then, it's Robson time!

9.44pmThat's simply fantastic from Roddick. It would be great to see him go just one further in his final ever Grand Slam. Del Potro awaits.

9.42pmGAME SET AND MATCH! He's done it! He's not retiring just yet! The crowd on Ashe have gone wild and quite rightly. 7-5 7-6 4-6 6-4.

9.40pmTHREE MATCH POINTS RODDICK

9.40pmGAME SET AND MATCH! Hold your horses, it's not Roddick - yet! Wawrinka eases past Dolgopolov 6-4 6-4 6-2.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 *5-4 FogniniFognini holds. The simple equation is if Roddick holds now, he's through. The crowd will love that.

9.37pmUNDERWAY! Gasquet and Johnson start their match...

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 5-3* FogniniA routine hold for Roddick leaves him just one game away from the last 16.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 *4-3 FogniniBREAK! Roddick looked like a new man in that game! He battles hard to claim the break for a 4-3 lead. The finish line is in sight.

9.29pmSET! Tipsarevic recovers from an early break to take the opening set of his encounter against Zemlja 6-4.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 3-3* FogniniRoddick manages to hold when at times it looked like he may not manage it. The 30-year-old is beginning to look a little tired, while Fognini has found a second wind.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 *2-3 FogniniVery good from Fognini, who now leads 3-2 with that hold. Roddick has a lot to ponder.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 2-2* FogniniBREAK! And the Italian needs just one of them as he sends a forehand winner beyond the reach of Roddick. Perfect response from Fognini. We're back on serve.

9.14pmTHREE BREAK POINTS to Fognini...

9.12pmIncidentally, the winner of this match will take on Del Potro for a place in the quarter-finals.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 *2-1 FogniniBREAK! "Come on" screams Roddick after he claims a crucial break in the fourth set. Advantage the big American now.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 1-1* FogniniBack over the Ashe, where Roddick has followed Fognini's lead by holding his opening service game.

9.09pmGAME SET AND MATCH! At the sixth time of asking 2009 champion Del Potro wins through against Mayer 11-9 in the breaker. DP goes through in straight sets.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-6 *0-1 FogniniMeanwhile, Fognini opens the fourth set against Roddick with a hold.

9.05pmA quick Del Potro vs. Mayer update: Their third-set breaker is currently with serve at eight points each! DP leads 2-0 in terms of sets.

9.03pmSET! There are sets being won all over the place! Wawrinka takes a 2-0 lead courtesy of a 6-4 success over Dolgopolov.

9.01pmSET! Fognini has got him at the third time of asking! Have to say that didn't looking like coming, but it has! The Italian wins the third 6-4. We're going into a fourth...

8.59pmThis game has been tremendous. Roddick has saved TWO break and set points with a couple of superb shots. Deuce.

8.53pmTIE-BREAK: Argentines Del Potro and Mayer head into a third-set tie-break. Victory for DP will see him reach round four.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) *4-5 FogniniNevertheless he holds in a game which saw him produce a fantastic drop shot. Roddick now serving to stay in this set.

8.50pmINJURY ALERT! Fognini goes over on his ankle - that really looked like it hurt. He's up, but he doesn't look comfortable.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 4-4* FogniniFognini takes Roddick all the way to deuce. However, the American holds his nerve to serve out for four games each. Roddick is now just two game away.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) *3-4 FogniniYou don't need me to tell you what has just happened! Another hold. 4-3 Foggy.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 3-3* FogniniRoddick responds with a hold of his own. I wouldn't be surprised if another breaker is required to sort this set out.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) *2-3 FogniniRoddick makes Fognini work hard but the flamboyant Italian battles hard to hold for a third time.

8.30pmUNDERWAY! Tipsarevic gets his round three encounter against Zemlja off and running.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 2-2* FogniniSome powerful forehands from Roddick level up the set at two games each. He's looking in good form at the moment.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) *1-2 FogniniStill on serve with three games played. Credit to both of these players. They've performed well with the ball in hand this evening.

8.22pmSET! Wawrinka takes the opening set against Dolgopolov 6-4.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) 1-1* FogniniFognini needs breaks but he doesn't look like succeeding at the moment. It's now one game apiece in the third.

Roddick 7-5 7-6(1) *0-1 FogniniDespite losing that point, Fognini holds the opening game of the third set.

8.16pmWOW! What a point! Fognini plays a stunning shot through his legs but Roddick somehow stretches to volley in. Fantastic.

8.13pmSET! Stunning performance from Roddick in that breaker. He runs out a 7-1 winner and receives a standing ovation. He'll miss moments like this.

SECOND SET TIE-BREAK*Roddick 6-1 Fognini

SECOND SET TIE-BREAKRoddick 5-1 Fognini*

SECOND SET TIE-BREAKRoddick 4-1 Fognini*

SECOND SET TIE-BREAK*Roddick 3-1 Fognini

SECOND SET TIE-BREAK*Roddick 2-1 Fognini

SECOND SET TIE-BREAKRoddick 1-1 Fognini*

SECOND SET TIE-BREAKRoddick 0-1 Fognini*

Roddick 7-5 *6-6 FogniniHe copes very well thank you very much! Breaker time.

Roddick 7-5 6-5* FogniniA love service game for Roddick at a crucial time. Big pressure on Fognini now. How will he cope?

Roddick 7-5 *5-5 FogniniIt wasn't pretty from Fognini but he has managed to hold. Don't be surprised if this goes into a tie-breaker.

7.59pmUNDERWAY! Dolgopolov and Wawrinka get their match underway.

Roddick 7-5 5-4* FogniniBlink and you will miss it, trust me! Another sharpish hold from A-Rod.

Roddick 7-5 *4-4 FogniniBut he doesn't break. In truth he didn't look like doing it, which seems to be frustrating him at the moment.

Roddick 7-5 4-3* Fognini"Game Roddick" says the umpire as Fognini fires into the net. This would be a very good time for the American to break...

Roddick 7-5 *3-3 FogniniWell it took a little longer this time, but Italy's Fognini gets the job done. Following those early breaks, neither player has looked like claiming another.

7.43pmSET! Great character from Del Potro, who faced set points against fellow Argentine Mayer. He now leads by two sets to nil thanks to a 7-5 success.

Roddick 7-5 3-2* FogniniI'm really struggling to keep of with this. It's literally two minutes a game at the moment! Roddick holds again for a 3-2 lead. Surely they can't keep this up!

Roddick 7-5 *2-2 FogniniFognini is not hanging around either! He flew through that game to level up proceedings at two games apiece.

Roddick 7-5 2-1* FogniniThat Roddick is rude, giving me no time to settle in! He's recorded his first hold of the set to lead 2-1.

7.36pmEvening everyone!

7.35pmAnyway, that's enough from me for now. I'll be handing you over to the capable hands of Liam Apicella who will expertly guide you through the rest of the action.

Roddick 7-5 *1-1 FogniniBREAK BACK! Typical Fognini. At one point he's waving at himself on the big screen inside the stadium before being broken to love.

7.32pmOpportunity for Roddick? Fognini makes the error and it's 0-30.

Roddick 7-5 0-1* FogniniBREAK! Now then. Fognini has the break straight away as Roddick begins this second set disappointingly.

7.28pmMeanwhile, David Ferrer has seen off a typically-valiant Lleyton Hewitt to reach the fourth round. Two incredible competitors there, but the Spaniard just has that little bit extra in the tank to get him through.

7.27pmGAME, SET AND MATCH! Ferrer 7-6(9) 4-6 6-3 6-0 Hewitt

7.26pmRoddick takes the opening set after Fognini puts a backhand volley into the net. The American started off well but allowed the Italian to come back into it. Still, the 2003 winner leads.

7.24pmSET! Roddick 7-5 Fognini

Roddick 6-5* FogniniThat's more like it. Roddick holds thanks to a big, powerful smash. He's shaking his racket as if to pump himself up and the crowd respond accordingly.

7.20pm...But the American saves it with a trademark booming ace.

7.19pmRoddick goes long and it brings up another break point...

7.18pmBrilliant again from Fognini who lashes a clean backhand winner down the line, 30-30.

Roddick *5-5 FogniniThe momentum is very much with Fognini now. He holds to love quite easily. Meanwhile, the crowd get going, trying to urge Roddick on as he prepares to serve.

Roddick 5-4* FogniniBREAK! Groans from the crowd on Ashe as Roddick slams a forehand into the net. Fognini has the break.

7.10pmDesperately unlucky for the Italian. He's holding his own in the rally but slips at the vital moment before Roddick volleys home for deuce. He's smiling, he's okay.

7.09pmWow. A fantastic backhand brings up the break point for Fognini.

7.07pmAnother expert volley at the net from Fognini, 0-15.

Roddick *5-3 FogniniMeanwhile, Fognini holds to love. He's come back into this but his poor start hasn't helped him one bit. Roddick to serve for the first set.

7.05pmShots there of veteran tennis journalist Bud Collins in the crowd. Good to see him.

Roddick 5-2* FogniniA routine hold to love there for Roddick. Fognini serving to stay in this first set.

Roddick *4-2 FogniniNot bad from Fognini there, who dinks a deft volley over the net to give himself the hold. Not too much action at the net so far.

Roddick 4-1* FogniniIt's a sweet backhand now thhat gives Roddick the hold. It looked like it could have been out but Fognini chooses not to challenge.

6.57pmAnother beauty from the American makes it 40-15.

6.56pmRoddick sticking it to Fognini with a rasping forehand, 30-15.

6.55pmSET! Bad news for Lleyton Hewitt in his match with Ferrer as the Spaniard takes the third set 6-3. Ferrer now leads 7-6 4-6 6-3.

Roddick *3-1 FogniniThe Italian finally gets off the mark with a hold.

6.51pmQuite a contrast between the two players out there right now. Roddick is the down-to-business, no-nonses type, while Fognini looks like the sort of guy that fancies himself quite a bit.

Roddick 3-0* FogniniIt's a little trickier for Roddick this time but another Fognini error puts the former champion 3-0 ahead in just seven minutes.

6.49pmRoddick hits a backhand into the net and it's 30-30.

Roddick *2-0 FogniniBREAK! Not a bad start at all from the American as Fognini finds the net to give Roddick the break.

Roddick 1-0* FogniniThe Roddick serve is in full flow already as he holds the opening game to love.

6.42pmHere we go then, Roddick to serve.

6.38pmHowever, if he plays anything like he did against Bernard Tomic in the last round then they'll see a a bit more of him yet. He blew the Aussie off the court in that one.

6.37pmThe fans are steadily filing into the great arena knowing that it could be the last time that they see their hero.

6.36pmOkay then, Roddick and Fognini are out on Arthur Ashe going through their warm up.

6.31pmSET! And it looks like Del Potro has taken the initiative in that one. The big Argentine, who won the tournament in 2009, comes through the opening set against Mayer 6-3.

6.29pmIncidently, the winner of Roddick's match versus Fognini will meet either Del Potro or Mayer.

6.26pmIt's gone a little bit wrong for Lleyton Hewitt against David Ferrer. The Aussie has dropped serve and is 0-2 down in the third.

6.24pmflitting back quickly to the Djokovic win, he'll face the winner of Alexandr Dologpolov's match with Stanislas Wawrinka. Those two are on court later this evening.

6.15pmTo update in the other third-round match going on at the moment, Del Potro has an early break and leads 3-2 against Mayer.

6.13pmSET! It looks like Hewitt's match with Ferrer has some way to go yet as the Aussie wins the second set 6-4 after Ferrer took the first 11-9 in the tie-break.

6.12pmThere's very little to seperate these two going into this one, with Roddick winning their only previous encounter which came at Eastbourne this year.

6.09pmOf course, all eyes have been on Roddick this week after he announced that he would be retiring when his run at the tournament ends. Can he prolong his career by one more match this evening?

6.07pmAnyway, up next for us is Andy Roddick's third-round clash with enigmatic Italian Fabio Fognini.

6.05pmUPDATE: Juan Martin del Potro has just started his third-round encounter with Leonardo Mayer.

6.04pm"It was important for me to start off strong and be committed to each point and I played well."

6.03pmHere's some words from Djokovic now...

6.01pmThere it is, Novak Djokovic eases his way into the fourth round with a comprehensive straight-sets win over Julien Benneteau. There wasn't anything overly spectacular about the performance but he did more than enough to win. He'll have conserved some energy with that one as well ahead of the second week at the tournament.

5.59pmGAME, SET AND MATCH Djokovic 6-3 6-2 6-2 Benneteau

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 *5-2 BenneteauBREAK! This one's all but over. Djokovic masterly breaks to love and will now serve for the match.

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 4-2* BenneteauSimple stuff again from Djokovic as he holds to put himself within two games of the fourth round.

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 *3-2 BenneteauBREAK! What did I say? Djokovic brings up break point thanks to glorious backhand winner before Benneteau mistake gives the Serb the break.

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 2-2* BenneteauHe's been a model of consistency so far has Djokovic and continues to pin Benneteau back before eventually holding. He's just biding his time here, looking for the opening, and you feel that it'll come sooner rather than later.

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 *1-2 BenneteauGood recovery again from Benneteau though. He gets back to 40-30 before unleashing a forehand winner into the corner.

5.42pmDjokovic really motoring now. An unstoppable forehand return makes it 15-30.

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 1-1* BenneteauBoom. Djokovic hammers another ace down the line to bring up the hold.

5.39pmThe Frenchman giving a look of bemusement now as he hits a woeful backhand that just about reaches the net.

Djokovic 6-3 6-2 *0-1 BenneteauIt's a good start from Benneteau anyway as he holds with relative ease.

5.36pmIt'll be Benneteau to open the serving in this third set. He needs some sort of miracle if he is to reach the fourth round now.

5.32pmSET! Too good from Djokovic. The Serbian rarely looked troubled in that second set and he takes it 6-2. It's a long way back for Benneteau now.

Djokovic 6-3 *5-2 BenneteauBREAK! There was some big, attritional baseline hitting from these two in that game but Benneteau fires long and Djokovic has the break. He'll serve for the second set.

5.27pmSET! That's desperately unlucky for Hewitt. He breaks back against Ferrer to force the tie-break but the Spaniard wins it 11-9.

Djokovic 6-3 4-2* BenneteauNo, it's not a chance for Benneteau. Djokovic continues to dictate from the back of the court and has the Frenchman scrambling around all over the place before sealing the hold.

5.24pmChance for Benneteau? Djokovic hits a ropey forehand long and it's 15-30.

Djokovic 6-3 *3-2 BenneteauBenneteau saves a break point to finally hold.

5.18pmThat's poor. Benneteau double faults to bring up break point but, luckily for the Frenchman, Djokovic fires long and we're back to deuce.

5.16pmIt's a good recovery from Benneteau to bring up game point but he then can't deal with a Djokovic return and we're at deuce.

5.14pmWonderful again from Djokovic. A first-time backhand return makes it 15-30.

Djokovic 6-3 3-1* BenneteauIn contrast to his opponent, Djokovic is looking as cool as ice out there. Benneteau makes the error and the defending champion goes further ahead.

Djokovic 6-3 *2-1 BenneteauBenneteau, who seems a little antsy out there, gets the hold after Djokovic hits long.

Djokovic 6-3 2-0* BenneteauAs good as Djokovic is at taking the ball early he's also great at delaying his shots until the last moment. One such forehand flies past Benneteau and the Serb consolidates the previous break with the hold.

5.04pmBenneteau having a bit of a barney with the umpire now. Not too sure what's he's moaning about.

Djokovic 6-3 *1-0 BenneteauBREAK! Djokovic gets off to a great start in this second set with a break.

5.03pmApologies for the delay there, but we had a slight technical glitch here. The system seems to have a vendetta against all humans and decides to not work at the most choice times.

5.02pmSET! Djokovic hammers down an ace and, after a failed challenge from Benneteau, gets the hold and the set 6-3.

Djokovic *5-3 BenneteauBenneteau slams down a couple of aces to hold to love for the first time in the match. Djokovic will serve for this opening set.

Djokovic 5-2* BenneteauRoutine stuff from Djokovic, who holds. One point was a quite spectacular backhand when he was forced back way behind the baseline. That's what he's all about - pulling out moments of magic like that when his back is against the wall (almost literally in this case).

Djokovic *4-2 BenneteauBREAK! He's got the break point now though. Benneteau hits a forehand into the net and Djokovic has the breakthrough.

4.47pmDjokovic brings up the first break point of the match and thinks he wins it, but the ball is called out. He challenges it and the ball is on the line, but the point has to be replayed.

4.45pmWonderful from Djokovic. A whipped backhand lands right in the corner and it's 30-30.

4.43pmI've just been reminded that five-time champion Jimmy Connors is 60 today. Happy birthday, Jimmy! The only man to win the US Open on three different surfaces.

4.42pmAs the players catch a minute's rest, it's looking like another scorching day in New York.

Djokovic 3-2* BenneteauThat's classic Djokovic. He's taking the ball very early and wins the game with a couple of clean winners that whizz past Benneteau. Is there a finer all-round athlete in the men's game?

Djokovic *2-2 BenneteauDjokovic makes a couple of unforced errors before Benneteau wraps up the game with some classic serve and volley action.

4.36pmYou may remember Benneteau giving Roger Federer a run for his money in the third round of Wimbledon this year. The Frenchman led by two sets but was pegged back by the eventual champion.

Djokovic 2-1* BenneteauNothing to trouble Djokovic in that game as he holds comfortably to go back in front.

Djokovic *1-1 BenneteauThe Frenchman forces the mistake out of Djokovic and holds.

4.28pmBenneteau was 40-0 there but Djokovic does what he does best and hits persistently from the back of the court to bring it to deuce.

Djokovic 1-0* BenneteauBenneteau showing some confident groundstrokes from the back of the court there but Djokovic starts well to hold.

4.21pmOkay then, we're underway in this one and it's Djokovic serving.

4.19pmIn the four that he's lost he's taken just one set off the Serbian and that was in a 7-6 6-7 2-6 4-6 defeat in the first round of Wimbledon 2009.

4.17pmTrawling through the history books it makes fairly grim reading for Benneteau. The Frenchman has won just one of his previous five encounters with Djokovic.

4.15pmThe players are out and going through their warm-up.

4.13pmUPDATE: Ferrer and Hewitt have just started their fourth-round match. That one's sure to be full of dogged determination and hard graft.

4.10pmSo, what matches are you looking forward to today? David Ferrer takes on former champion Lleyton Hewitt at the same time as Djokovic vs. Benneteau, but I'm excited about Laura Robson's encounter with defending women's champion Sam Stosur. The 18-year-old Brit has made most of the headlines at this year's tournament and many are tipping here for another shock today. Now that would be something.

4.09pmThose two are due out on court in a few minutes.

4.08pmThere's a whole raft of stars on court in New York today and we'll be starting our coverage with defending champion Novak Djokovic taking on French world number 31 Julien Benneteau.
