Maria Sharapova knocked out of Wuhan Open by Timea Bacsinszky

Maria Sharapova's campaign at the Wuhan Open comes to an end in the third round following a straight-sets defeat to Timea Bacsinszky.

Maria Sharapova has failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open in China after suffering a 7-6(3) 7-5 defeat to Timea Bacsinszky.

Bacsinszky came close to putting Sharapova on the back foot instantly in the first set, but she relinquished the break point in the Russian's opening service game.

From then on games went by the way of serve, resulting in a tie-break, which swung in Bacsinszky's favour as she took it 7-3.

Sharapova took an early advantage in the second set by breaking her opponent's serve at the first time of asking and snatching another break down the line.

However, Bacsinszky fought back to draw level on 4-4 in the second set before eventually breaking Sharapova to win the contest.
