Ana Ivanovic has fought her way into the last 16 of the Madrid Open with a tough straight-sets win over Elina Svitolina.

The world number seven was made to work hard during the opening set, but she managed to find a decisive break at 2-1 before taking it 6-3.

A resurgent Svitolina moved into a 2-0 lead at the start of the second before Ivanovic battled back to level at 2-2. Both players jostled for supremacy after that, only for the Serbian to break again to close out the match 6-3 6-4.

Ivanovic will face either Carla Suarez Navarro or Julia Goerges for a place in the quarter-finals.
