Roger Federer remains motivated in pursuit of further glory

World number two Roger Federer admits that he may quit tennis if he is relegated from playing on show courts at major tournaments.

Roger Federer has admitted that playing centre-stage at major events is what encourages him to continue playing the sport.

The 33-year-old, who has won a total of 17 Grand Slam titles during his illustrious career to date, ends the year as world number two following a resurgent 12 months on the court.

Despite having to wait more than two years since his last major victory at Wimbledon 2012, Federer remains motivated due to the fact that he is still one of the sport's main attractions.

"I definitely am fortunate to always be playing on Centre Court and very often prime time," he told BBC Sport. "I must say - and this is honest - I don't know if I would still be playing if they put me on Court 4 every day.

"That would be difficult for me, having played on all these wonderful courts around the world and now playing in front of a fraction of those people - that would be rough."

Federer has won more major singles titles than any other man in tennis history.
