Roger Federer has advanced through to the third round of the Australian Open after coming from behind to defeat Simone Bolelli.

The world number 48 stunned the Rod Laver Arena by taking the first set before Federer roared back to run out a convincing 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 victor.

After his unbeaten start to the year, Federer was expected to make light work of Bolelli, but the Italian's aggressive tactics paid off in the first set with one break of serve being enough to edge into a shock lead.

However, after a medical timeout, Federer returned a different player and after dropping just four points on serve, he increased the pressure on Bolelli who lost his serve in the penultimate game of the set.

The Swiss was in full flow, and although Bolelli was having his moments from the baseline, he was beginning to be thoroughly outclassed as Federer raced through the third set.

It would be a similar story in the fourth as Federer soon opened up a 5-1 advantage, and despite Bolelli saving two match points, the four-time winner soon got over the finishing line to make the last 32.

The 33-year-old will play Jeremy Chardy or Andreas Seppi on Friday.
