Paralympic swimmer Gemma Almond announces her retirement from competitive swimming.

British Paralympian Gemma Almond has announced her retirement from competitive swimming.

Almond, who was part of Great Britain's team at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, has decided to call time on her career following almost a decade of competing.

On Twitter, the swimmer wrote: "So everything is clear/out in the open. On Saturday I retired from competitive swimming. It has been an incredible 16 years in the sport...

"And 8 years on British programmes/teams. Thank you to all who were involved and made a home Paralympic Games dream possible!"

Almond won a medal at the 2011 European Championships in the 200m individual medley.
