Wales pick up their first victory of the World Cup with a 17-10 win over Samoa.

Wales picked up their first World Cup 2011 win with a victory over Samoa in a nervous and highly physical clash in Hamilton.

James Hook missed his first penalty attempt of the game from the halfway line, but made up for the error 10 minutes later with a closer-ranged attempt.

Samoan fullback Paul Williams levelled the scores with a penalty kick of his own, before Wales re-took the lead with another Hook effort.

The Samoans had a try disallowed after touching down with a double movement following a pick-and-drive play in the shadow of the Welsh posts, but a similar play seconds from half-time resulted in a converted try from prop Anthony Perenise, making the score 6-10 to Samoa going into the break.

Wales got the second half off to a good start with a penalty from fly-half Rhys Priestland, followed by a relentlessly physical but scoreless 25 minutes, until Priestland slotted another kick through the posts to put Wales ahead.

A break down the line from replacement Leigh Halfpenny and some quick passing resulted in winger Shane Williams touching down for his Welsh record-equalling eighth Rugby World Cup try, making the final score 17-10.
