The British and Irish Lions reportedly plan to officially announce Warren Gatland as head coach for next summer's tour of Australia on September 4.

Warren Gatland is expected to finally be appointed as head coach of the British and Irish Lions next month.

The 48-year-old Wales chief has been the red-hot favourite to succeed Sir Ian McGeechan for almost a year.

However, his potential appointment was cast into doubt in April when he fractured both heels after falling from a ladder at his beach house in New Zealand.

According to the Daily Mail, Lions officials were sufficiently reassured by Gatland's rehabilitation when they visited him recently and they now plan to officially install him into his new role on September 4.

The first leg of next summer's tour will be a match against the Barbarians in Hong Kong on June 1.
