Political party trying to block South Africa playing at World Cup

A political party in South Africa is upset at the racial makeup of the Springboks' Rugby World Cup squad and is attempting to block them from travelling.

A political party in South Africa has taken the South African Rugby Union to court in an attempt to block the Springboks playing in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The Agency for New Agenda party are disappointed with the racial makeup of the side and have called upon the North Gauteng High Court to remove the players' passports.

The party's president Edward Mahlomola Mokhoanatse said in his affidavit: "The action is a public duty to defend our constitution and to consign to the rubbish bin of history all vestiges and remnants of racial bigotry, racial exclusion and discrimination."

This is not a view shared by the Congress of South African Trade Unions though.

"Cosatu claims this as a victory for workers and a victory for transformation in rugby in South Africa," said provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich. "This is a move in the right direction."

South Africa are in Pool B at the World Cup, alongside Scotland, Samoa, Japan and the USA.
