Stuart Lancaster drops five from England World Cup squad

England head coach Stuart Lancaster drops five from his 50-man World Cup squad ahead of their trip to Denver.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster has cut five players from his World Cup squad ahead of a fortnight in a training camp in Denver, Colorado.

Maro Itoje, Elliot Daly, Ed Slater and Stephen Myler miss out, while Nick Easter has also been dropped as he continues to undergo treatment with club Harlequins on a back injury.

Aside from Easter, the players cut will be on a standby list as Lancaster, who will pick his final 31-man squad by the end of August, trims his 50-strong party to 45.

"I have spoken to all the players to explain that things can change very quickly and they can come back in at any point," said Lancaster.

"Nick will stay for treatment on his back rather than risk aggravating it further with travel and we look forward to him rejoining the squad in August when we will review the squad and also consider those who have been unable to begin the camp after suffering injuries at the end of last season.

"The players have worked very hard for the past three weeks and there is a really good feel about the group. Denver is the next stage in our training, a chance to develop further in a different environment."

England have spent three weeks at Penyhill Park.
