An eighth World Cup worker has died after falling from a construction site at the Itaquerao stadium, which is due to host the tournament's opening game in Brazil.

An eighth World Cup worker has died in Brazil after falling from a construction site while installing temporary seats at the Itaquerao stadium.

In a statement released by construction company Fast Engenharia, Fabio Hamilton da Cruz fell to his death from about 26 feet, while firefighters have claimed that he dropped from around 50 feet.

According to the Associated Press, a hospital statement confirmed that the worker had died before he was due to have surgery following the head injuries that he sustained as a result of the fall.

The stadium in Sao Paulo is due to host the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Croatia on June 12.
