Sam Allardyce slams "irresponsible" James Tomkins following assault punishment

Sam Allardyce describes James Tomkins as "irresponsible" after he was fined for assaulting a police officer when 'drunk and disorderly'.

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has described James Tomkins's off-field actions as "unacceptable" after he was fined £3,500 for assaulting a police officer.

The fine relates to an incident which occurred last December outside the Sugar Hut nightclub, which has been made famous by reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex, in Brentwood after the defender was refused entry to the venue.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to assault, as well as charges of being drunk and disorderly in public and obstructing a police constable.

"He will be doing some community work," the Daily Star quotes Allardyce as saying. "The bottom line is he shouldn't have got himself into that situation or position.

"He should have more responsibility. I do not take kindly to a lack of discipline off the field at all. It is irresponsible and it is unacceptable."

Instead of giving Tomkins a further fine, West Ham have told the defender that he must take coaching sessions and visit disabled and under-privileged children as part of his community service.
