Joey Barton shortlisted for gay ally award

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton is nominated for an award by a gay lifestyle magazine for campaigning against homophobia in football.

Joey Barton has been shortlisted for an award by a gay lifestyle magazine.

The Queens Park Rangers midfielder is shortlisted for Out in the City magazine's "Straight Ally of the Year" award for his support for eradicating homophobia in football.

Linda Riley, who organises the awards, told The Mirror: "Joey Barton's work to tackle homophobia in football is highly commendable so it is no surprise that he has been short-listed. I hope other footballers follow his lead."

Barton was among a number of footballers to wear rainbow laces in their football boots in support of gay rights last year.
