Football discussions have dominated Twitter in 2013 after it was revealed that seven of the top 10 spikes in activity related to matches.

Manchester United's Champions League exit to Real Madrid was the most talked-about event by UK users this year, while three England matches also made the list.

Overall, New Year's Eve and Mumford & Sons' set at Glastonbury were also popular on Twitter, as was Andy Murray's Wimbledon final victory in the summer, according to BBC News.

The two most popular retweets worldwide came from Glee star Lea Michele, who thanked fans for their support following the death of her boyfriend and co-star Cory Monteith.

The message was shared 408,000 times, while a post confirming the death of Fast and the Furious actor Paul Walker was retweeted 400,000 times by users.
