Sunderland fans raise cash for tribute to Newcastle United crash victims

Supporters of Sunderland put rivalry aside to raise over £7,500 to pay tribute to two Newcastle United supporters who died earlier this week.

Sunderland supporters have raised over £7,500 to pay tribute to two Newcastle United fans who died in the MH17 plane crash above Ukraine on Thursday.

John Alder, who was in his 60s, and Liam Sweeney, 28, were travelling to New Zealand to watch the Magpies on their pre-season tour.

Following the news, a group of Sunderland supporters set up a charity fundraising page which will contribute towards a floral tribute for the pair, according to BBC Sport.

More than 1,000 people have so far made a donation.
