The shirt worn by Diego Maradona when he scored his famous 'Hand Of God' goal for Argentina against England has been sold for a record price at auction.

The shirt which was worn by Diego Maradona when he scored his 'Hand of God' goal against England has been sold for £7.1m.

At the 1986 World Cup, the Argentina legend netted two of the most famous goals of his career as he guided his nation past the Three Lions in the quarter-finals.

One of Maradona's goals came via his hand, the other being a magnificent solo effort, and the shirt has since been in the possession of Steve Hodge, the England player that he swapped shirts with at the end of the game.

Ahead of the auction, the shirt was valued between £4m and £6m, but it has been revealed that the highest bid was £7.1m, the highest fee ever paid for a piece of sport memorabilia.

Brahm Wachter of Sotheby is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "This is arguably the most coveted football shirt to ever come to auction, and so it is fitting that it now holds the auction record for any object of its kind.

Maradona, who passed away in 2020, went on to be named as the player of the tournament.
