The American carded a five-under 67 to lead a chasing pack, comprising Spain's Jorge Campillo and England's Robert Rock and Danny Willett, by one shot.

Micheel is playing on a 10-year exemption on the European Tour following his victory at the 2003 USPGA Championship.

Rookie Matthew Baldwin, who graduated through the Challenge Tour last season, will resume tomorrow on three-under, with Italian duo Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero on two-under.
