Rory McIlroy says that he wanted to take part in the Indiana event in order to maintain his fine form ahead of the Tour Championship later this month.

Rory McIlroy has said that he decided to compete in the BMW Championship because he wanted to maintain his fine form ahead of this month's Tour Championship.

The 23-year-old guaranteed his place at the Atlanta showpiece by winning the Deutsche Bank Championship at the start of last week.

However, despite being advised to take the week off, he then took part in Indiana and walked away with another PGA Tour title yesterday.

"I came here with the mindset from Boston that I just wanted to keep going on this roll," said McIlroy.

"Some suggested that I could have taken a week off and still could have been in the top five in the FedEx Cup standings going into Atlanta, but I felt like I was playing really well and didn't want to stop that run.

"I sort of picked up where I left off in Boston, shot 64 the first day here, and am just playing with a lot of confidence right now."

The Tour Championship begins on Thursday, September 20.
