Rory McIlroy hints at fatigue after Wentworth exit

Defending champion and world number one Rory McIlory suggests that fatigue contributed to his second-round exit at the BMW PGA Championship.

Rory McIlory has suggested that fatigue played a part in his second-round exit at the BMW PGA Championship.

The world number one and defending champion missed the cut by four shots at Wentworth after shooting 78 on Friday.

The European Tour's flagship event was McIlroy's fifth in succession - he broke his own course record at Quail Hollow on the way to victory at the Wells Fargo Championship last week - and the Northern Irishman has hinted that his recent excursions were catching up with him come the back nine.

McIlroy reached the turn at level par for the tournament, but a bogey at 10 triggered a run of dropped shots which saw him finish on five-over-par and ensured him a welcome weekend off ahead of the Irish Open at Royal County Down on Thursday.

"That little stretch killed me," the four-time Major champion admitted to reporters.

He added: "I'd love to have played the weekend but it's a weekend off I probably need."

Italian Francesco Molinari went round in three-under today to stay atop the leaderboard by one shot from An Byeong-Hun.
