Rory Knox takes the place of Rory McIlroy in The Open

World number 77 Rory Knox is awarded a place in The Open next week following Rory McIlroy's withdrawal.

Scottish golfer Rory Knox will play in the Open championship next week, following the withdrawal of defending champion Rory McIlroy.

The world number one ruptured ankle ligaments while playing football with friends, and he confirmed that he has pulled out of the tournament yesterday.

Knox, who is ranked 77th in the world, has admitted that it is not an ideal way of qualifying for a Major championship, but he is excited to be competing at St Andrews.

He told BBC Sport: "My wife sent me a text out on the course saying that Rory had withdrawn. Nobody wants to gain because another player is injured, so it is a horrible way to sneak in but I am very happy."

Knox has previously played in two Major championships.
