World champion Sebastian Vettel claims pole position with his final qualifying lap for tomorrow's European Grand Prix in Valencia.

World champion Sebastian Vettel has claimed pole position for tomorrow's European Grand Prix in Valencia.

It looked as though Williams driver Pastor Maldonado had done enough to claim top spot when he beat the rest of the field with his flying lap.

However, Vettel responded to clock a time of 1:38.086 with what was his last lap of the session.

Maldonado was then knocked down to third on the grid moments later by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who produced a lap that was 00.324 seconds slower than Vettel's.

There wasn't such good news for Hamilton's teammate Jenson Button, who has been forced to settle for ninth spot.

The top ten for tomorrow's race:
1. Vettel
2. Hamilton
3. Maldonado
4. Grosjean
5. Raikkonen
6. Rosberg
7. Kobayashi
8. Hulkenburg
9. Button
10. Di Resta
