Fernando Alonso to miss Australian Grand Prix

McLaren-Honda confirm that Fernando Alonso will not take part in the Australian Grand Prix.

McLaren-Honda have confirmed that Fernando Alonso will not take part in the upcoming Australian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, 33, was airlifted to hospital on February 22 after suffering concussion during pre-season testing in Barcelona.

Alonso released a video last week insisting that he is "completely fine" following a series of scans, but doctors have recommended that he does not race in Melbourne later this month.

Reserve driver Kevin Magnussen will take Alonso's place in the team when the race weekend gets underway on March 12.

Alonso is expected to be back in the cockpit for the Malaysian Grand Prix at the end of March.

"Fernando's doctors have recommended to him that, following the concussion he sustained in a testing accident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 22, for the time being he should seek to limit as far as is possible any environmental risk factors that could potentially result in his sustaining another concussion so soon after his previous one, so as to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is normal medical procedure when treating athletes after concussions," read an official McLaren-Honda statement.

Alonso returned to McLaren for a second spell at the end of last season after spending four years with Ferrari.
