Wolverhampton Wanderers looking to end 14-year streak against Burnley

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be looking to end a 14-year streak when they face Burnley in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

Wolverhampton Wanderers will hope to end a 14-year streak when they face Burnley in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

In Gary O'Neil's first season in charge, Wolves have largely performed above expectations in sitting 10th in the standings at the present time.

That could have plausibly been better had the likes of Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Hwang Hee-chan all not suffered injuries since the beginning of February.

As a result, Wolves failed to pose a sustained threat in the final at Aston Villa on Saturday night, going down by a 2-0 scoreline in the West Midlands derby.

A three-day turnaround will prove enough for Cunha to return to the squad in some capacity, with the likelihood being that the Brazil international will be selected on the substitutes' bench.

Wolves' struggles against Burnley

Wolves will also be attempting to record their first league double over Burnley since the 2009-10 campaign courtesy of the 1-0 victory that they were able to post in December.

In the second of those games that season, Wolves would run out 2-1 winners at Turf Moor courtesy of a Matt Jarvis opener and Clarke Carlisle own goal.

Since then, Wolves have failed to prevail in a single contest at Turf Moor, a run that has lasted six matches and just over 14 years.

During that period, Burnley have recorded four wins and two draws, with the Clarets posting 2-1 and 1-0 triumphs during the last two meetings.

The most recent Turf Moor tussle took place in April 2022 as a second-half Matej Vydra goal proved to be the difference between the sides.

Minimal stats in Wolves' favour

Wolves will also need to get on the scoresheet to avoid losing three successive away matches without scoring for the first time since between April and August last year.

Furthermore, Wolves are without a win in five away fixtures against newly-promoted sides, with four of those games ending in draws with the other being a last-gasp 2-1 reverse at Sheffield United in November.

As for Burnley, Vincent Kompany's team are showing some their best form of the season, collecting five points from games against West Ham United, Brentford and Chelsea.

Before that recent return, Burnley had not gone more than one match without losing, inevitably leaving them in the Premier League relegation zone.

As it stands, though, the North West outfit are now just four points adrift of safety with the prospect of 16th-placed Everton potentially being docked further more points for breaches of the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.
