Wigan Athletic manager Owen Coyle claims "stonewall penalty"

Wigan Athletic manager Owen Coyle says that his side should have been awarded a penalty before going behind in last night's Championship clash with Doncaster Rovers.

Owen Coyle has claimed that Wigan Athletic were denied a "stonewall penalty" in last night's 2-2 draw with Doncaster Rovers.

In the 15th minute and with the scoreline still goalless, 21-year-old defender Reece Wabara appeared to bring down Grant Holt in front of goal but the referee waved play on.

The Latics fell behind 10 minutes later when Theo Robinson shot low past Scott Carson, and that lead was added to by Chris Brown just before half time.

Second-half goals from Shaun Maloney and Leon Barnett rescued a point for the hosts but Coyle believes that his side would have won comfortably had Carl Boyeson awarded a penalty.

"I've seen it back and it's the biggest stonewall penalty you'll ever see in your life," Coyle told Sky Sports News. "Grant's a yard in front of the lad and the lad's just dragged him to the ground.

"I've got no doubts if we had gone that goal in front tonight we'd have gone on to win that game with a couple of goals to spare. But, fair play to Doncaster, they got a 2-0 lead.

"[In the] second half it was like that old movie 'The Alamo'. It was waves of attack, we kept coming and coming and it's a great characteristic to have in your team."

Wigan beat Barnsley on the opening day of the season before falling to defeat at Bournemouth.
