West Ham United co-chairman David Gold says that a club-record spending spree could be on the cards for this summer, with Manuel Pellegrini after up to five new players.

West Ham United co-chairman David Gold has revealed that Manuel Pellegrini will be heavily backed during his first transfer window at the club.

The Hammers started a new chapter on Tuesday by appointing Premier League-winning manager Pellegrini as David Moyes's successor at the London Stadium.

A number of protests marred West Ham's 2017-18 campaign, as supporters were left unhappy by a perceived lack of financial commitment from the club's backers.

Gold has vowed to spend big this summer, however, with Pellegrini after four or five new additions prior to next season.

"You can't put a figure on [what Pellegrini has to spend this summer] because you don't know the players who are going to leave, therefore that will add to the kitty, or won't, as it might be," he told talkSPORT.

"What I can assure everybody is that we'll probably spend more money in this window than we've spent in any window in the past. That bodes well for our intent and we must wait and see where it takes us.

"[Pellegrini's] working on it right now, that's his job, that's why he's been brought in. He's identified the positions he feels he needs to strengthen and it's up to him now to tell us the players and we'll do everything we can to bring them in."

West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon may be the first player to arrive at West Ham during the off-season, while Phil Foden has been linked with a loan move from Pellegrini's former club Manchester City.
